Went to see the animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars at a drive in theater last night. The film was okay, better than I expected. The concession stand was selling generic LED light swords (light sabers). They were kid of cool. No wonder they sold quite a few. Watching the kids playing with them was fun. They quickly figured out that you could stick two together and have a double blade lightsaber like Darth Maul’s. The swords switched colors at the push of a button. at one point just as it was getting dark about 8 or 9 kids were up front under the screen having an all out lightsaber battle. It looked pretty cool. I was wishing I had my camera with me.
We were ill prepared for the temperature drop after the sun went down. Boy did it get cold. The drive in was having a double feature the second show was Batman: The Dark Knight, which we had to watch from inside the card because of the cold.
I stopped by Toys R Us on Friday to see if there was anything new or some toy I just couldn’t live without. As I walked in they ahve their big display for Star Wars right up front. As I walked up I heard this young boy ask his mom how much Star Wars did one store need. He continued to look around and walked over to the LEGO AT-TE and said, “Hey here’s the AT&T walker”. I had to hold in a giggle. As he walked away he told his mom, “these are not the legos I am looking for” in a very Obi-wan Kenobi sort of way. Even though I know he did not mean it in a Star Wars quote kind of way it was still rather funny. I did not get anything on this TRU trip but at least I was entertained.
Well the reviews are starting to come in for the new Star Wars animated film and they are not all that great. Personally, I was none too impressed by the trailers. This animation is doing nothing for me. It looks like the video clips in the video games but not quite as good. Not sure why Lucas decided to go with this choppy new look (the cartoon networks mini mini-series was done better than this feature film). An article in the Reading Eagle dared to compare this style to anime. I don’t think they could have been more wrong. Maybe they just don’t know what the anime style of animation really is or not. But this is not anime; it is video game animation.
Yes I will be going to see it. The geek in me propels me to do so, but I am not expecting too much especially now that I am reading reviews, which are pretty much telling the things I was already feeling about it. I hate to say it but as for the sci-fi animated films coming out this summer, Fly Me to the Moon might be the best of the bunch. And if I am going to spend the money to go to the new IMAX Theater here in Reading it might as well be for the 3D flick. I’ll hit one of the other theaters for a matinee for Star Wars Clone Wars.
Will the animated series due out this fall on the Cartoon Network be the same crappy animation?

One of the funniest men alive has died today; he was 81. He had complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago.
I remember him best from the Carol Burnett show and from there Mama’s Family. He and Tim Conway were a hoot. I loved them. But he had done so much more than just that show. So many funny films. I know I will be spending the weekend honoring his memory by watch such great films like these:
Blazing Saddles
History of the World Part I
Dracula: Dead and Loving It
The Pink Panther films
If only I could dig up a copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special to watch him as the many silly characters he plays in the Lucas’ TV blunder. (Although having seen this as a child when it first aired I rather liked it.)
I have always been a fan of the folks who can make custom action figures especially when they are such high quality as those over at Sillof’s Workshop.
But these are no ordinary custom figures. What do I mean by ordinary? I guess to clarify; I would say in this case ordinary means creating figures of existing characters not already in action figure form.
So why are Sillof’s figures so extraordinary? Well these figures are of existing figures and/or characters but they are totally re-imagined. Below you will see what I mean with the steampunk Star Wars figures, which are just stunning in design and workmanship. But don’t just take my word for it head to Sillof.com to see more detailed pictures and to read a little about the inspiration behind each figure. While you are there be sure to take a look at the Victorian Avengers and Gaslight Justice League figures they’re amazing.
I love miniatures. Anything in a small scale is great to me. I have been fascinated be mini stuff since I was a kid. Maybe that’s why I like LEGO so much, the mini figures that come with each set.
Most recently I was very excited to hear Playmates toys would be getting the license to make the action figures for the new Star Trek movie. Even more excited when I heard that one of their new figures would be in a 3” scale. Yeah! I saw they have a small 2” line of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and just introduced new small-scale play sets for these mini figures too. So perhaps in this day of the mini block figures (Kubrick and Minimates have been all the rage for the last few years) I am not the only one who likes small things.
Hasbro brought us the mini 2” Galactic Heroes in their Star Wars line a few years ago too. While these are geared more for the younger kids they are still a must for me. Then they gave us Marvel heroes and now Indiana Jones. I picked up three of these sets already and since they have a mail-away exclusive figure I will be getting at least three more as well. Since I have these little guys stuck to my car’s dash with Velcro I can swap they out every once in awhile. So the more the merrier!
Today, May 4th, is often referred to as Star Wars Day. I just got an email from DeepDiscount.com wishing me a Happy Star Wars Day and it included a link to download a free PDF version of the book Star Wars Legacy of the Force: Betrayal by Aaron Allston. You need to download the book before May 13th.
