Marvel-ous Cartoons Are A Coming

Add comment June 27th, 2008 06:43am whataslacker

Marvel’s Wolverine and the X-men will come to TV in 2009 thanks to NickToons. But that’s not all that’s a coming. We will also get Ironman: The animated series!

Each will offer up 26 half hour episodes and give us all a reason to set our Tivos.

Check out the new trailer for Wolverine and The X-men (Marvel must have cleared up their little spat with the Foo Fighters).  :)

But wait you also get…

Another animated feature film on DVD this fall. NEXT AVENGERS: HEROES OF TOMORROW. That makes five.

Don’t Use Cash at Spencer Gifts They Suck

Add comment June 26th, 2008 09:19am whataslacker

OMG! I will never, ever, ever (and might I add ever) buy anything from a Spencer’s Gifts store again, I picked up a toy for a friend the other day and it turns out he no longer needed it so I went to return it.

Check out this scam, they will no longer give you your cash back. I had no idea they had changed their policy to something so ridiculous. (Tiny sign in the store was hidden behind junk on their counter.) Maybe they are heading toward bankruptcy like Sharper Image. So I guess the next thing Spencer’s will try to pull on me is telling me my store credit in the form of the gift card (they forced on me) is no longer valid.

Really what kind of rip off is this? I paid in cash I should be allowed to get cash back. I would understand if I was returning something that was used or opened, but the toy was unopened mint in package with the receipt!

When a company reduces their customer service to zero it is usually a sign they aren’t doing well and could care less if you ever come back. I for one will never set foot in another Spencer’s Gifts since they in essence stole my twenty bucks.

So I beg of you do not buy anything from this rude retailer. But if you have to be sure to pay with your credit card so you can get your money back or at the very least issue a charge back on the card when they refuse to give you your money back.

Now I am stuck with twenty dollars credit at a store I never wish to set foot in again. Maybe I should sell it on ebay with a full explanation as to why it is for sale for less than the value along with a warning about buying from Spencer’s at all. Even if it does not sell at least I will get people to notice how stupid a no cash refunds policy is for a big company like Spencer’s Gifts is.

Allergic Reaction to Perfume

Add comment June 24th, 2008 11:15am whataslacker

Every day it seems that my allergies get worse. The other day I had a pretty bad allergic reaction to a co-workers perfume. I have always been overly sensitive to strong smells especially if my sinuses are infected or if my seasonal allergies are in full bloom (so to speak). But this was more than mere sensitivity. My throat felt like it was closing, my voice changed, my breathing became labored and my eyes were burning.

As my symptoms progressed I started to get scared. And I did not have my eppy pen with me. Idiot!

So I called my doctor to see if there was anything I should do. The nurse I spoke with told me I was just sensitive to smells, true but this was more than that. I was having the same type of allergic reaction as if I just ate celery. (That’s right I said celery.)

Thank god my co-worker was out of the office for most of the day so I had a chance to clear the air and start to feel a little better. My voice never did get back to normal until the next day. Overall I felt lousy for the next couple of days.

I am often affected in this way while out shopping. At least then I can leave the building and go home where I can breath. I can’t just come and go at work.

Business Tips 101 - Email Addresses

Add comment June 24th, 2008 11:11am whataslacker

Small businesses often have inappropriate email addresses like smithcompany@yahoo.com or jonescompany@aol.com. This is not at all professional and often makes your company look as if it is not legit.

It really does not take too much time or money to set up a professional email with your own domain name. All you need is a good, low cost hosting company. Look for companies that offer shared web site hosting as this will lower the cost per month for their services. A great option is Concentric.com they offer email services for less than $7 per month or set up a nice web page to go with that new professional email address for less than $10 per month.

With a little more information about your company and a professional email address you’ll have customers that are more confident in your abilities as an actual business. A business should never have an AOL, Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail email account when professional email and web hosting are so affordable these days.

WALL-E Music Comes to Earth

Add comment June 21st, 2008 09:29pm whataslacker

I just got the WALL-E soundtrack, well actually score, the other day.

WALL-E sound track is pretty good. I have always been a fan of musical scores while I work. The lack of lyrics is less distracting for me. Listening to this music, which is some times, interrupted by robo-speak and sound effects has really gotten me hyped up to see the film, I could live without the two songs from Hello Dolly, but perhaps once I see the film their inclusion on the sound track might make sense.

For more information on the WALL-E Soundtrack CD head over to ScifiSlacker.com

Excel File Hell

Add comment June 20th, 2008 11:35am whataslacker

What the hell is wrong with Microsoft? Why in the world would they change the default file type of one of the world’s most used office programs?

Microsoft Excel 2007 (as well as Word and Power Point) now have an XML based file format. The new Excel file extension is .xlsx, which of course cannot be opened with any of the older versions of the program.

Thank god I remembered we had one computer in our office that was new enough to have the latest version of the software on it. (I forgot because I never use the Microsoft Offfice 2007 products because I simply don’t like them.) At first I wasn’t sure that it would even be able to save it as the old version as the company that sent me the file could not figure it out and told me that was the only available file format.

I really hate the new tabbed browsing with in the new office programs and where the heck did they go with the good old fashion text menus?!? They hid them is what they did. I finally figured out how to find their help file (tiny little question mark was eluding me). The text menu where you have the option to choose SAVE AS is now hidden behind the little office logo at the top of the screen on the left-hand side. Who would have thought to look there? Not me. Can you make it any harder folks?

For those of us that do not have access to a brand spanking new version of Excel Microsoft has kindly [insert sarcasm here] created a tool (not sure if this is available for Word or Power Point) for us backward people who cannot upgrade every time they release a new, improved [insert said sarcasm again] version.

You can download this lovely little Excel 2007 to 97-2003 conversion tool at Microsoft.com. Even though it is free it does come with a cost. You will have to install all the updates for your version of windows before installing the converter. Which can take you a few hours, if like me, you are a little behind on your XP updates (who know they were up to XP Service Pack 3, not me).

For those of us with little time there is also an online converter, but this might not be an option if you too have a confidential file you need to convert like I did. However, unlike the Microsoft compatibility pack you do not need to have Microsoft Office installed on your PC to convert the file.

I am pretty sure that if I am going to have to continue to use the newer versions I am going to have to pick up a copy of the book Office 2007 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies.

I Want It Wednesday: LEGO Mindstorms

Add comment June 18th, 2008 02:02pm whataslacker

I love robots and I love Lego. So what better combo for me than a Lego Robot? I have the first version of the Mondstorms system and really need to get myself the new one. I love the new functionality and the new look (not such a fan of the technic sets so I was disappointed when this was first announced, but I guess there is only so much one can do with the good ole brick).

Pig in Boots

Add comment June 16th, 2008 11:17pm whataslacker

This little piggy won’t be going to market. At least that’s what the farmer says. Little Cinders, a saddleback pig, has a phobia. She’s afraid of dirt (mysophobia). Go figure. A pig that can’t play in the mud. The fine folks at the Northern England farm fit her with a pair of little rubber boots so she can get around her pen just fine.
